Discovering Bergamo
Before taking off to enjoy the hinterland in your rental car, do check out some of the many exciting sites of Bergamo town. The heart of Old Town, Piazza Vecchia, positively oozes with culture, with its nice mix of medieval and Renaissance architecture. Highlights include the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, Colleoni Chapel, the Rocca walled stronghold and museum, the Archeology Museum, the Science Museum, as well as Accademia Carrara, one of the best collections of medieval, Renaissance and Baroque paintings in Northern Italy.
Day tripping by car
A handful of ski resorts are within one hour by car from Bergamo. Some nice places are located in the mountains surrounding the Brembana Valley, including Foppolo, Carona and San Simone resorts. Lake Iseo is one of the smaller and less crowded lakes of Northern Italy. Also nearby is the charming town of Crespi d’Adda, wihch is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Then there’s the shopping in nearby Milan.
When to go
While most of Italy experiences dry summers and wet winters, Bergamo has wet (but still hot) summers and dry and quite chilly winters. A nice time for general tourism – historic sites, shopping, alfresco dining – is thus autumn and spring, which feature less severe conditions or crowds.

Driving rentals in Italy
Remember that Italy drives on the right side of the road. It’s advisable to carry an international drivers’ licence or some form of ID. In Northern Italy there is an extensive network of highways and good roads, but drive with caution as you venture on to the windy roads in the Alps and Lakes region.
