Discovering Cagliari
Old Town Cagliari in south-central Sardinia is full of charm and shopping opportunities focused on the pedestrianised roads Via Manno and Via Garibaldi, Via Roma and Largo Carlo Felice, as well as nearby Via Alghero, Via Paoli and Via Dante. The bustling variety of boutiques brings to mind Copenhagen’s Stroget. Old Town is also packed with many restaurants, including many specialising in seafood.
Daytripping by car
The best nearby highlight on the outskirts of Cagliari is wonderful Poetto Beach, which is eight kilometres from town. Besides the unequipped free beach, there is a beach that costs €3 for entry, for which you can hire deck chairs and umbrellas. Also doable as a long daytrip is Alghero, which is four hours from Cagliari and known for its grand beaches. Built a thousand years ago, Castello’s Historic District is high on a hill above the city. Unless you want a serious workout, take it easy and drive up here, which will save your energy for scrambling towers, walls and narrow lanes.
When to go
Cagliari’s Mediterranean climate features hot but dry and comfortable, non-humid summers wonderfully tempered by northwesterly winds. This is the most popular time to go. The winters are rainy but not too cold, but also decent for visiting as long as you don’t have your mind set on beaching.
